I was cooking this evening and re-listened to one of my old-time favourites: I love it not so much for its musical qualities (this is the first song of the album) but for the what it was for a few days - a soundtrack for one of the best journeys I have ever made: 36 hours on Transbalkan from Budapest to Thessaloniki and back.
And this is how I came to the conclusion that it is time to realise a long-time dream: see Lake Baikal!

so what do I mean? Transsiberia, of course!!! Here is how I'll get there:

I think this is a very good idea and you are just in time to be ahead of the hordes of western tourists!
Bahh, I just didn't get in to a conference in Madrid! Sh*t.
By the way, being a new-blogger producer doesn't stop us doing(and being interested in) our job, pursuing hobbies and liking movies and books, etc.
I didn't turn into a baby-producing machine whose interests are limited to diaper sizes, feeding times and cute baby-outfits.
What's more, when February comes, I will need you more than ever to distract me from these things and talk about statistics, politics, food and travel, and - of course - music and nostalgia!
Don't worry, we stay with you!
You are goddam right, nana: we don't have a "statistics" label, and that is a shame. I am curious to know who will start it in a future blog...
Lynx, your dreams ar mine (oh big surprise!). And your problems are mine too: travelling home is not travelling, it is changing the landscape around you (and the people you see, too!) That is good, and reaaly good indeed sometimes, but not what we discuss.
Talking about travelling home: that is exactly what I meant while commenting your poll: I think I have four "homes" now, and spend my time between them.
Plus Bipolonium!!! And that was (almost) a real trip to me!!!
I think this is one of the biggest problems of expats.
For us holiday is a trip to home to visit those left behind. They are looking for it and expect it too, but not we! We want to explore new places, being on the road,,,have the feeling what lynx was putting into words so nicely commenting my San Diego post.
It sounds cruel not visiting your mom but going to exotic places instead,,still, we need it like the air.
Hey, Transsiberia express we also planned to take once. Maybe we should book a whole wagon for all of ourselves :) would be nice.
Very nice :)
I wish....
Ok, I stop it.
Hey Girls, why not??? I know that you are both busy with something else :-), but what if we make a long-term plan of doing this trip in, say, 2 or 3 years? Now that we are adults and have the money (sort of) and can decide where we go - what holds us back if not the seemingly "difficult" task of organising something like this?
Maybe we could start up with something smaller, like, spending 4 days on the seaside somewhere, or in a camping in the mountains (Slovakia, Croatia, Italy?) Or renting a house in Provence or, or or....?
As it is likely that we won't be living in the same place for many years to come, we could at least try to have this type of meetings? WHY NOT?
And even if the picture of "many families with loads of small children having holidays together" looks frightening at first glance, it would be great fun, knowing ourselves :-)
SAY YES!
YES!
Renting something in Provence or Tuscany sound good, though I wouldn't take my toddler for a two weeks train-trip, for the sake of all of us.
For my sake, can we arrange something which can be reached with a direct flight from here? Or, is on this continent? (Don't you want to see the Grand Canyon?)
Anyhow, this is a great idea and necessary too, and I can even imagine something WITHOUT the infants and other attachments...just like in the good old times?
Great that you are in :-)
I was thinking at the first instant something less megalomaniac: like trying to coordinate the date of our visit home so we can go from there to a nice camping or apartman on the Croatian coast...and then more and more adventurous things as we get richer and older!
and hey, attachments are necessary to take care of the kids while we get trashed :-) (maybe we can wander off for a day or two?)
Do you think I might join you? I would love to! and who knows, I could take care of the children while you go camping...
