First time

Last weekend, for the first time in my life I could touch a violin. (It's always been my dream but my classmates at music school had never let me because they were afraid I would hurt it.)

What's more, last weekend, for the first time in my life I could hold a violin the way you should hold it and - good Lord! - I actually played couple of notes on it!

I think I can now cross it out of my list "things I should do before I turn thirty" and put the item learning to play the violin on the list of "things I should do before I die". Ouf, there is so much stuff there already, I should better go now.

Yesterday afternoon I saw Talented Mr Ripley - again. Cousin told that in an earlier version John Malkovic played Tom ... cold ran on my back ...
There is one very understandable point in the film: he wants to have the circumstances to be able to enjoy life.
The other thing was that he plays the piano. For me the piano is the thing I would like to learn.
I could spend half a year with only doing things I missed before. First: learn to take time for things I am interested in.
(My funny valentine: anybody has it?)

I can't help it, sorry: :-)

There was an earlier Ripley in French, in the sixties, called "Plein Soleil" where the main character is played by Alain Delon. While he acts really good (and Highsmith claimed that he was the perfect Ripley) I liked the new one better (tarelle does not agree on that).

Malkovich does play Ripley but in another one of the series, called "Ripley's Game" that came out in 2002. He is not as fascinating as I thought he would be, but it is watchable.

They made a film from the second book of the series ("Ripley Under Ground") but it never came out in the cinema, I wonder why. Anyway, I don't think I would go and watch it because I just read the book and I really did not like it much...I don't think it would make a good film...

You're so lucky, I have both and both are in English! (And I have bought them both at Shakespeare & Company , you know, the little bookshop in front of Notre Dame :-D )

I know :) and I want to see it with you as soon as possible: which means within a few months. Seriously.

Well, I must say I really DO prefer Delon's performance in Plein Soleil, but it is out of ignorance: I actually didn't see Matt Damon in the role (appart from the trailer, and I really didn't like it, which explains why I didn't go to watch the movie). Now it seems from your comments that I should watch "Talented Mr Damon". AND I should read the book. Now this leads me to one of the trickiest questions about movies: should I read the book first, or watch the movie first? (This could be a new post of its own, with label "Theory", don't you think?)

For me, most movies are disappointing after reading the book.
I liked Talented Mr. Damon too (which means I was freaked out for a week after watching it), I don't know the book...maybe I would suggest to start with the movie.

That is exactly my problem: if you read the book first, you find the movie uninteresting and superficial, but if you watch the movie first, you spoil the plot which was the support of excitement when reading the book. So for me it is always a very close contest, and a mostly debatable issue with no general answer, the answer of which being just the opposite from one book to the other, from one movie to the other. What about this one?

Now for you who haven't seen Plein Soleil: just watch it, it is amazing piece of cinema! I think I have a copy somewhere in France, I can have it sent if you want.

In this particular case, since you know the story already, the original excitement about the book is gone already, so maybe..it is indifferent which one you choose.
But, if you read the book first, I feel that no chance is left for the Damon-movie.
